Understanding Bowling Score Sheets
Exploring the Bowling Score Sheet
- Bowling scores are maintained on a per-game basis, where each game consists of 10 frames.
- In each frame, you have two opportunities to throw the ball. A strike is earned if all pins are knocked down with the first throw, and a spare is earned if all pins are knocked down with the second throw.
Special Symbols on Score Sheets
- The score sheet uses symbols for strikes (X), spares (/), and other events.
- 'G' indicates no pins were knocked down on the first throw.
- '-' indicates no pins were knocked down on the second throw.
- 'F' indicates a foul, treated as zero pins.
Bowling Scoring Rules
Structure of a Bowling Game
- A standard game consists of 10 frames.
Number of Throws per Frame
- You typically have two throws per frame.
- In the 10th frame, if you score a strike or spare, you receive an extra throw, allowing three throws in total.
Calculating a Strike ‘X’ Score
- A strike earns 10 points plus the pins from the next two throws.
- If a strike is scored, the number of pins knocked down in the next two throws is also added.
- For example, if you knock down 'strike, strike, 9 pins', 29 points are added to the frame where the strike was scored, calculated as '10 + 10 + 9'.
Calculating a Spare ‘/’ Score
- A spare earns 10 points plus the pins from the next throw.
- If a spare is scored, the number of pins knocked down in the next throw is also added.
- For example, if you knock down 'spare, 9 pins', 19 points are added to the frame where the spare was scored, calculated as '10 + 9'.
Score for an Open Frame
- If you don’t knock down all the pins in two throws, the total number of pins knocked down is your score for that frame.
Special Rule for the 10th Frame
- An extra throw is granted if you score a strike or spare in the 10th frame.
- This allows a maximum of three throws in the final frame.
Maximum Score in Bowling
- The maximum score per frame is 30 points (three consecutive strikes).
- The perfect game score is 300 points, achieved by scoring 12 consecutive strikes.
